Simply Crochet: Tallula Top

And...we're back :-) That's right, the next stop on the Simply Crochet blog tour stops in here today for the last time. So far you have seen some of the simply WONDERFUL crochet that can be found in this book. I don't know about you but I find it inspiring. Behind the designs there is a collection of talented designers that is amazing. Not to mention the uber talented Robyn Chachula herself...it is no secret that she is my absolute favorite crochet designer and I am thrilled that I can call her my friend.

So, let's get on with the party :-) I told you all about the Botan Placemats that I did as a 3 ball project but I didn't tell you about the other project I did.

The Tallula Top is a little girls top made out of the timeless beauty of crocheted motifs around the body coupled with textured griddle stitch, makes this a perfect piece for every little girl. I made it without too much fuss or frill so it will look great made oversized and worn as a dress or fitted and worn as a top. I do want to mention that if you are making this for a little girl who still puts small objects in her mouth choose a different closure than the buttons as I don't want her to choke...okay?

I used the wonderful Spud and Chloe Fine and I have to tell you I simply LOVED it! Such wonderful luster to the yarn, it felt great in my hands and it blocked beautifully. I would put this yarn on my top ten. Yes, I loved it that much.

So, how long did it take me to make this? It took me about a week of working on it consistently. Actually, while my youngest was in preschool I would go to a place called Einstein Bagels and work on my projects. Which means I can honestly say that I spent a week of 4.5 hours a day on this project. Not long at all if you think about it.

Simply Crochet: Botan Placemats

Welcome to the next stop in the Simply Crochet Blog Tour. I am your host, Marly Bird! I have two designs in this great book but today we are going to talk about the 3 Ball project, the Botan Placemats.

--You know what, let me begin by telling all of you what a great idea I think this book is. So many people I know (knitters usually) tell me that they don't crochet because it takes so much yarn and that they never can find anything that they like that actually doesn't take that much yarn. Well, the next time I hear that I am going to hand them this book. It is FULL of absolutely fantastic items that maximize the value of the yarn but don't compromise on style.--

Anyway, let's get on with the show :-)

The idea for the Botan Placemeats (ravelry link) came from a felted coaster I made myself out of some scrap Stitch Nation, Full of Sheep yarn I had left over from working with Debbie Stoller (that is a whole different story). The coaster is a simple two row color repeat stripey thing that sits to the left of my computer and is absolutely perfect. I love this coaster and thought that a set of cute felted placemats would look wonderful on my kitchen table.

When I saw this inspiration photo I though that making the placemats felted just like my coaster would be perfect. They have clean lines and are not too busy which are two things I like. But it needed that little extra something. So, I pulled out one of my MANY crochet stitch dictionaries and made the little Botan Flowers and stitched them to the placemat. The flowers are the little touch that makes them cute, don't you think?

Are you on a time crunch? I made these in about a day and a half. SERIOUSLY! Actually, I had enough time from the deadline that made two sets to play around with colors. Check out the other color option you could do.

As for yarn amount, these placemats literally use just about every last bit of yarn of yarn in the three skeins. I had maybe 24" left of each color. Not bad huh?

So,if you are looking for a quick, inexpensive and easy project or a gift for the holidays or a house warming these are perfect! Go and favorite them on Ravelry would ya?

Peek-A-Boo Chevron Tunic

Yep, I am still here. I have been very busy finishing up a book I am writing with Jill Write for Leisure Arts and various other patterns for magazines.

Here is my newest published pattern. It is in the newest issue of Inside Crochet. You want the Ravelry links? The Peek-A-Boo Chevron Tunic is what I called it but in the magazine it is the Chevron Tunic I hear (I don't have the magazine yet) but you can find it in Inside Crochet, Issue #4 October/November

Here are some pictures on flickr I took of it before I sent it to the UK.

To tell the truth, I am not totally happy with the color choices that we used over the left boob. It would have been cuter with a blue instead of the green but the color cards we used to choose the colors made it look like the green would be perfect. The hard part is that the yarn is kettledyed and each skein is a little different from the next so even though one skein of the multy looked great with the green the others didn't. Does that make sense?
Here, I took pictures with a blue held up to it so you can see what it would look like in a different color.

So, I know some of you will be wondering, "why make one side different than the other?" Well, you don't have to do that at all but I thought it was a cool way to make an everyday chevron piece different. Actually, that is how I got the Peek-A-Boo idea. To me, the idea that only one boob has a striped chevron is like a game of peek a boo.

What do you think? You can be honest with me. I know that some of you will just LOVE it and some will HATE it. I am prepared for that as I too am in a love/hate relationship with it.

The only other thing that I might change when I publish this pattern myself is the way I did my decreases. I think they are a little too drastic and I think that I will do a little more math to make them a little more subtle in future patterns.

Other than that...I hope you will go to RAVELRY and favorite it right away :-)

Hi, I wanted to let you all know that I got to chat with Linda Cortright, editor of Wild Fibers Magazine on the podcast this week! Here is the 411.

Have you heard that it is the International Year of Natural Fiber? Seriously, it is a United Nations sanctioned event. How cool is that?

Not sure what that means for you? Well, that is why I am leaving this post :-) In today's world we are all trying to think more green, we are trying to have a better awareness of our carbon footprint and are much more conscious of the global impact we are making vs. just local. Not to mention we LOVE NATURAL FIBER! Put all of this together and we have more than just a Kal-Cal for shopping bags to use at the grocery store...we have a movement for social awareness beyond anything that has been done in the fiber world.

Okay, I am not the most knowledgeable person about this so I went to the person who was! I had a chance to talk with Linda Cortright, the head honcho of the Keep The Fleece organization, about what it is they do and why we should be involved.

I am always scared when I get a book from a publisher to review. What if I don't like it? What if I would rather give it back than look at it again? What if I have absolutely nothing good to say about a book? What do I do...do I offer my honest opinion?

Well, good thing I don't have to worry about this with this book! I just got"It itches" by Franklin Habit today. I took the last 30 minutes to read through it and had a hell of a laugh!

Perfect book for any knitter...and not that much money! It retails for $12.95! In today's economy that is perfect!

To be honest, I am not a regular reader of Franklin's blog so I was not sure of what to expect from this book. Now that I have read it...that Franklin is one funny mofo! He hits the nail right on the head with these cartoons!!! My favorite is on page 15. Read the book and you will see what I am talking about :-)

Do I know Franklin? Funny thing is that when I was at TNNA 08 in Ohio I actually go to meet Franklin. But, at the time I did not know it was him. Here is the story!

I was getting off of the van from the convention center and the driver was insistent upon helping me get out of the van. As I stepped out of the van I made a comment, to no body in particular..."he just wants to look down my shirt!". Just then...the man who had been standing there knitting a sock and waiting for me to get off the van looked at me and said..."don't they all?"!!! LOL!!! Yep, it was Franklin himself!

Well, some of you might have noticed that I added a new feature to the blog. Yep, that is right...I have added a way for you to donate to your favorite Podcast :-)

I am not sure if you all know how much time it takes to put the podcast together. If you add the time it takes to coordinate the pre-interviews and the interviews, research and putting together the right questions we all want to know the answers to, editing the show, picking the right music, putting together the show notes, exporting into a MP3 then getting it uploaded to the site it can easily take up to 55 hours an episode! YES...FIFTY FIVE HOURS!

Could you imagine doing something that took up that much time and not to get paid for it? Well, of course you can. You all are knitters and crocheters :-) Then why am I adding the tip jar?

Well, I posted a question on Ravelry regarding just that. I wanted to know if it would be bad to add a tip jar to the site and the general consensus was that it was a GREAT idea. So, there you have it. I add a way for you to donate a buck or two or three to the Yarn Thing Podcast.

I would type more but John is breathing over my shoulder to use the computer. I will jump on later to say more...

Why is the sound different?

I have had a lot of questions lately about the sound of the show.

Well, I wanted to let you all know that I have to record the interviews in Stereo. Why? Well, when I am able to record in stereo I don't talk over top of the person I am interviewing. See, my voice is in one ear and the person I am interviewing is in the other ear. That way, you are able to hear the complete conversation.

Also, I am able to edit the conversation much better. If there is a place where I am talking over the person I am interviewing I am able to silence my voice and you are able to still hear the other person. Make sense?

So, please understand I am trying to make a better listening experience for all of you ;-)

Cheryl's Tip from Ep. 25

I sure will..First…Let me Magic Link Cheryl amimono so that she will be able to come here and see if I am saying this correctly :-)

Okay, if you cast on 30 stitches then work them for your gauge swatch.

If your 30 stitch swatch is 5 inches meaning you are getting 6 stitches to the inch and you need 5 stitches to the inch…

you know that if you go UP a needle size that your gauge swatch will be exactly one half of an inch WIDER than before. Meaning the 30 stitch swatch is now 5.5 inches meaning you are getting approx 5.5 stitches to the inch…so you need to go even bigger…

So, now you have 30 stitch swatch is now 6 inches meaning you are getting 5 stitches to the inch which is exactly what you want.

Does that make sense? Therefore, looking at the original swatch and knowing that I needed 5 stitches to the inch but the swatch was reading 6 stitches I could assume that going up 2 needles sizes would INCREASE the WIDTH of the swatch by one inch. 6 divided by 30 equals 5. There you go.

30 Stitch Guage Swatch

This is from Cheryl Oberle and I hope I have this right!

If you CO 30 stitches for a guage swatch. Measure your swatch and if you are getting more or less of the amount of stitches you need per inch for each needle size you go up or down your swatch will go up or down 1/2 and inch.

Dental Misery!!

I wanted to jump on here and let all of you know that I am still alive and have not fallen off the face of the Earth :-)

Actually, I had one of the worst days I have ever had at any medical facility on Thursday...just to give you a little clue...I was in the Dentist chair at 8:00 am and by 2:00 pm the dentist was calling an oral surgeon to see me by 4:00!

Oh, ya...and I finished my sock I was working on by 9:30 so I had NOTHING to work on for all that time!!!

Okay, so I just had a thought as I was sitting here writing out an outline for the next episode (yes, I am still here...just had to take an injury time-out). I am dedicating the next episode to Annie (you all know how much I adore her) and I thought it would be great if others who wanted to share their love with her could do so!

That is where the idea came in...You all know that Annie listens to my podcast (at least that is what she told me) so I was thinking...what if I filled the podcast with well wishes from some of her other devoted fans?

Kickin' my A**!!

**Sorry, too tired to write something different so I cut and pasted from the blog...Sorry**

I don't know what I have but my body feels like crap! My head is cloudy, my nose is stuffy, my throat is scratchy, and the cough...the cough sounds like I smoke 3 packs a day! (I don't smoke btw!) Some body put me out of my misery!

Worst yet, I can't seem to keep my eyes open long enough to get any knitting done! I know, I know, knit with my eyes closed...but my fingers don't seem to know what they are doing right now. Like they have been taken over by the bug too. Aughhh!

Anyway, thought I should get on here and let you all know where the heck I am. Don't worry I will be back soon (if this damn medicine will ever kick in!)

Okay Ali, here they are. It took me some time to really think about them but I think I finally have a list of things that I can actually accomplish (ya right)...

Here is the deal everybody Ali is having a contest and I want to win :-)

Here is the 411- all you have to do is:
1.) Leave a comment on Her BLOG letting Ali know what color you want and mention who's blog you heard about the contest on...hello...MARLY aka YARN THING!!
2.) Then head to your blog and post a list of your summer knitting goals (there may be an end-of-summer contest of some sort to celebrate summer knitting accomplishments...) and mention this contest (with a link to this post- http://www.skeinsherway.com/2007/05/pre-summer-contest.html)

Cro-Knit Night?

Hey, I recorded an episode the other day and I am not sure if you all would like to listen to it. So, I thought I would ask you on here first before I post it.

This is the scoop: I was working on some dishcloths (bored out of my mind) and thought it was a good time to talk to you all. So, I started to record my random thoughts as I was working away. And you know what? I really felt like I was talking to a bunch of friends at a Stitch and Bitch group. Then I thought to myself, maybe it would be cool to schedule every two weeks a Cro-Knit Night via Podcast? On nights that I don't have a SnB group set up I am usually working on my projects really late at night...all by myself. With a Cro-Knit Night Podcast Episode we all could have a SnB together...bingo...not alone anymore!

I could play a little music, chat, work on UFO's...etc.

Alright, I see a need to start yet another blog and have it dedicated to just the podcast. So, here it is. To be honest with you, I have so many ideas as to what I want this blog to do for both you and me that I don't know where to start!

So, for now, this is going to be a place holder until I figure out what to do!
